Heading into last season, it seemed as though his time in Vancouver was coming to an end. After all, he hadn't been amazing up until last year. However, he had a bounce-back season and he was rewarded with a three-year contract extension that is bringing in $3 million per year.
However, as The Hockey Writers suggest, this contract was a terrible one for the Canucks to sign. Mostly, because Myers is 34 years old and the Canucks have lost out on Nikita Zadorov. This is going to place a massive burden on Myers, who now has to take most of the effort when defending guys like Conor McDavid and other superstars in the Pacific division.
It is also being argued that Myers had an outlier season and that there are plenty of other players who could have been brought in. For instance, former Canucks player Chris Tanev's name was mentioned. Needless to say, there isn't a whole lot of optimism concerning the Canucks and their defensive situation.
