Last season, the PWHL (Professional Women's Hockey League), proved to be a viable success with a very real fanbase behind it.

There were six inaugural teams including Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, New York, Boston, and Minnesota. Originally, these teams did not have names or real logos, although that has changed coming into this season. The fans are very excited to see how the league shapes up and whether or not it can build in its second year of operation.

Today, there was a very interesting announcement as it pertains to the PWHL. Essentially, the league has decided that going into the 2025-2026 season, it will be looking to expand to eight teams. This means two franchises will be added. As it stands, there is no confirmed report on what cities will be included.

For travel reasons, one could safely assume that the league would prefer to keep things to the East coast. It is just simpler that way. Some of the cities that could potentially make sense in that case are Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and even Detroit. However, if West coast expansion is in the cards, Calgary is a city that has been thrown around.

No matter what, this is a very good development for the league. Expansion is always a sign that things are going well. If the league was a failure, they would not want to make more teams liable. Either way, it is good to see the women's game gain traction in this way.
