This summer, Jarvis became an RFA. Of course, this can be a tough time for teams who may not have the cap space to sign their rising stars. Just look at Jeremy Swayman and the Boston Bruins to see what we mean. Well, today, the Hurricanes announced a massive signing in regards to Jarvis. According to Chris Johnston of The Athletic and TSN, Jarvis is now locked in for 8 years and $63.2 million.
Interestingly enough, this contract contains a loophole that will keep costs down for the Hurricanes on a yearly basis. Part of the $63.2 million is signing bonus payments that will extend over the course of nine years. This is an increasingly common loophole that allows teams to circumvent the cap when things get tight.
It is a strategy that is primarily found in the NFL. However, it has now found its way to the NHL, and we're sure that for some, this is going to prove to be a bit controversial. However, when you are a team that needs high-flying talent, sometimes, you just have to massage the numbers in your favor.
In 231 NHL games, Jarvis has scored 146 points. Last season, he had 67 points in 81 games, including a whopping 33 goals. Overall, he is a player with a ton of upside and Hurricanes fans are excited to see what he is going to do next. Needless to say, this is a deal that needed to get done.
