Since being selected by the Winnipeg Jets with the ninth overall pick in the 2014 draft, forward Nikolaj Ehlers has been an important member of the team. According to The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta, Ehlers isn't interested in signing a new contract in Winnipeg and is simply seeking a change of scenery. Although Ehlers' team has not yet made an official trade request, Pagnotta stated that he would be interested in a deal should one come up.
Prior to the NHL draft, it was revealed last month that Kevin Cheveldayoff, general manager of the Jets, was looking at trading for Ehlers.
The 28-year-old recently finished a season in which he scored 61 points and scored 25 goals while staying healthy the entire time. Within the league, Ehlers was beginning to acquire a reputation for being unable to maintain his health. Since the 201718 season, the native of Denmark hasn't participated in a whole 82-game season.
With just two assists in five games during the Jets playoff run, Ehlers had a difficult time. Ehlers has only scored 4 goals and 14 points in 37 career playoff appearances, or fewer than 0.5 points per game.
With a $6 million AAV and $6.75 million in compensation, Ehlers has one year remaining on his deal. With a 10-team no-trade clause in his deal, he does have some power.
With the 25-goal, 60-point Ehlers among the most illustrious names available, the trade market will heat up in the lead-up to the NHL draft.
