He is a phenomenal player who almost hit 70 goals last season. At this rate, he could end up being the best player in the league. That said, personal accolades won't do for Toronto Maple Leafs fans. They want to see real action in the playoffs. Anything short of a Conference Finals will be a failure.

In order to get there, the Leafs are going to need spectacular goaltending. This is not something they have gotten a lot of over the years. For now, they are putting their hopes and dreams in the hands of Joseph Woll, who is still unproven. However, while speaking to TSN, Matthews gave the netminder a huge seal of approval.

Only time will tell whether or not these comments age well for Matthews and the Maple Leafs. The fans are fed up with first-round exits and poor performances relative to the rest of the Atlantic Division. The Panthers have won a cup and the Lightning have won two in the last five years. In the eyes of many, now is the time for everyone to step up and deliver the franchise's first cup in nearly 60 years.
