In the end, Swayman signed for a contract worth $66 million over the course of eight years. He is making $8.25 million per year, which is pretty solid. While some thought he wanted to closer to $10 million, it does feel like the price he got paid is more than fair considering where he is in his career.
Now, however, Swayman might be left feeling a bit ripped off. This is because his good buddy Ullmark just got signed for the same AAV. However, instead of an eight-year deal, the Senators gave Ullmark a four-year deal worth a total of $33 million.
Now, the only goalie left to get signed is none other than Igor Shesterkin of the New York Rangers. As we reported yesterday, Shesterkin declined an eight-year deal worth $88 million. This would have made him the highest-paid goalie in the entire history of the National Hockey League.
It is going to be fascinating to see where this all goes from here on out. Goaltending is a fickle position. You can go from a hero to a zero quickly. That is what makes these long-term deals risky. Having said that, you have got to be happy for guys getting paid and creating generational wealth for their families.
