Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew passed away about a month ago and the Columbus Blue Jackets, as well as the rest of the NHL, have been in mourning.
In a recent post by Bleacher Report Open Ice, it was pointed out that Merzlikins has more than just the number 13 on the chin of his mask. Right next to the number 13, you can find a plate of spaghetti. For those who may be unaware, Gaudreau was known for eating spaghetti before games and there is a now-infamous image of him doing so.
This is a pretty cool tribute and it demonstrates that Merzlikins is actually thinking a little bit outside of the box here. You have to appreciate that kind of thing, especially given the circumstances. Goalie masks have always been about individuality, and there are plenty of goalies who have paid homage to loved ones through the art. This is no different.
When the season begins in a couple of weeks from now, there will certainly be a huge outpouring of support as it pertains to Gaudreau and the Blue Jackets. It shows that the hockey community is more united than ever before, which is a beautiful thing to witness.
