Back in 2023, the Colorado Avalanche took Mikhail Gulyayev with the 31st overall pick in the NHL Entry Draft.

This is a player that they were able to draft thanks to the Alex Newhook trade with the Montreal Canadiens. At 19 years old, Gulyayev spent the last year in the KHL. Coming into this season, some thought he might play in the AHL to develop with the Avalanche franchise. However, Gulyayev has made it clear he has no interest in that.

"My path to the NHL is to come and play right away,» Gulyayev said, according to Colorado Hockey Now. «I'm following my dream and not interested in anything else. I'm not against the AHL; it's a good league, but if I go to America and play, I will only play in the NHL."

So there you have it, Gulyayev will not be in the AHL this season. Instead, he will only leave his home country if it comes with playing time in the big leagues. It is an interesting strategy, and seeing how it all plays out will be an experience. Only time will tell whether or not he can make the NHL sooner rather than later.
