According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, Swayman has officially signed his contract. The news came in this morning with Swayman taking an eight-year deal worth an AAV of $8.25 million. This contract comes with a no-trade clause and a $23 million bonus. It is a solid deal for the goaltender who was reportedly looking for $8.5 million per year.
There were some confusing reports throughout the process. For instance, some thought that he wanted $10 million a la Carey Price. Furthermore, it was believed that he was looking to completely reset the goalie market. However, his contract is a lot lighter than some would have imagined when these negotiations first got started.
Having said that, some fans are just downright confused by the deal. In the tweets below, you see two common sentiments. The first is that this is an overpay. Considering the situation, any level-headed fan would disagree. The second sentiment is that the deal isn't rich enough to have taken this long to complete. If anything, the Bruins were playing a sad game of hard to get and it backfired.
Only time will tell whether or not this is a contract that ages well for both sides. What we do know is that the relationship is fractured. However, Swayman got his money and for him that is probably all that matters.
