At the close of each NHL season, the league rolls out its own award ceremony, dishing out individual honors like the Hart Trophy, the Vezina Trophy, and the Rocket Richard Trophy. But it seems the NHL Awards might be on thin ice.

According to Sportsnet's Elliotte on The 32 Thoughts Podcast, the league is considering axing the end-of-season gala in favor of a new approach.

«Friedman on 32TP says he doesn't expect there to be much of an award show this year, they're talking about copying the NBA, where they award the trophy during the playoffs, either on game day or the day before, then the player gets rewarded with a big ovation in front of the fans«

In fact, Friedman isn't counting on much of a show this year either. It looks like the NHL could switch to a system akin to the NBA's, awarding trophies either on game days or the day before.

Scrapping the NHL Awards altogether sounds appealing to some, with the event losing its shine and viewership. Plus, players likely prefer not having an award show right at the start of their offseason.
