On Wednesday morning, Steven Stamkos was asked about his current contract situation. Instead of the typical politically correct response, Stamkos instead expressed his disappointment. Stamkos shared he's upset that he doesn't already have a contract extension in place.

Stamkos told reporters he expected a deal to be done this summer, but the Lightning never called. Lightning General Manager, Julian Brisebois has now issued a response on the situation, and his comments upset some fans.

"I need to see how this season plays out before I make those decisions. After the season, once I've gathered that information, I can work with Steven and his agent on a contract structure that will be in the best interest of both sides." - Julien Brisebois

Brisebois' answer didn't sit well with many. There's a feeling that the GM essentially told his captain, star player, and lifelong member of the team that he's only as good as his last season played, and that his commitment to the Bolts throughout the years means little.

Stamkos was drafted 1st overall by the Lightning in 2008 and has captained the team to two Stanley Cups. He is playing on the final season remaining of a deal that carries a cap hit of $8.5 million.
