We have seen a number of these announcements recently, but this time, it's Colorado Avalanche franchise cornerstone Nathan MacKinnon who will be the beneficiary. On Thursday, the Halifax Mooseheads officially announced that they'll be retiring MacKinnon's jersey number later this month.

The Mooseheads plan to retire MacKinnon's #22 prior to their home opener on , wouldn't you know it, Friday, September 22nd, against the Charlottetown Islanders. Obviously, MacKinnon wears #29 in the NHL, but wore #22 throughout his time in Halifax in 2011, 2012 and 2013, prior to being drafted by the Avs 1st overall in 2013.

MacKinnon issued the following comment this week, ahead of the September 22nd ceremony:

"It's a true honour to have my jersey retired by the Mooseheads. I can't wait to share this moment with everyone back home in Moose Country."

MacKinnon, now 28 years of age, spent a pair of seasons with the Mooseheads in 2011-12 and 2012-13, registering an incredible 153 points in just 102 regular season games, while adding 61 points in 34 playoff games. In 2013, MacKinnon led the Mooseheads to a QMJHL Championship and the Memorial Cup, defeating the WHL's Portland Winterhawks in Final. MacKinnon was named MVP for his efforts.

Congratulations to MacKinnon on this incredible honour. Maybe someday he'll have the same honour in Colorado, this time with his #29.
