Heading into Panthers training camp, many fans, perhaps even the organization, had Spencer Knight locked in as the backup goaltender behind Sergei Bobrovsky. However, today the Panthers made a surprising roster move, sending down Spencer Knight to the AHL and seemingly opting with Anthony Stolarz as the team's backup.

The 22 year old, and 13th overall pick by the Panthers in 2019, is still exempt from waivers and will report directly to the AHL team. Knight hasn't played a game with Florida since leaving the team in February of last season to join the NHL's player assistance program. Later, Knight revealed that he is battling with obsessive compulsive disorder.
Perhaps the move is geared towards Knight's development and easing him back into professional hockey since his leave of absence, being the starter for the Charlotte Checkers instead of the backup behind Bobrovsky.
The Panthers signed Stolarz on the first day of free agency this offseason, and has performed well in his opportunities in the preseason.
The Panthers play their final preseason game on Saturday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
