NHL Insider reveals how much the salary cap will rise for next season
The NHL's salary cap has remained flat since the COVID-19 pandemic forced teams to play in empty arenas. The lost revenue fell on the player's portion of hockey related revenue and created an escrow that needed to be paid off before the cap could rise again. With the players portion of escrow paid back the cap is finally set to rise.
According to Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek of Sportsnet on the 32 Thoughts Podcast, the cap could raise quite a bit after next season and beyond; take a look.
F: The Hagel deal..
M: is a pretty good indication that the cap is going up
F: They're expecting the cap to go up 4 million next year and 5 million the year after.
If the cap does rise that much, it will give every NHL team much needed wiggle room. It also makes deals like Auston Matthews and the aforementioned Hagel a little bit easier to stomach.
It remains to be seen if the salary cap will go up by 9 million 3 seasons from now, but that could be the reason we're seeing teams lock in players for the term and the amount of money they are.
