Last week, in a top-tier women's hockey match in Sweden, HV71 captain Sanni Hakala faced a devastating injury that will have a lasting impact on her life.

In a collision with the goal post during the game, Hakala sustained severe injuries, leading to her hospitalization and subsequent surgery. In an Instagram post, the 26-year-old shared the heartbreaking news that she won't be able to continue playing hockey and is likely to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair.

Hakala revealed that she's paralyzed from the chest down with reduced function in her arms and hands, saying,

"Not only that I now have to stop playing hockey, something that has been a large part of my life for many years, but that I may be forced to live the rest of my life in a wheelchair."

Emphasizing the challenging road ahead, Hakala expressed her determination for rehabilitation:

"Now I need to put all my energy into rehabilitation so that I can recover as well as possible."
Both Hakala and HV71 have chosen not to provide further details on the injury or her status, urging everyone to show consideration and respect for her and her family during this difficult time.

Hakala, a proud representative of Finland, has showcased her talent on multiple occasions, participating in four Women's World Championships and the 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics, achieving bronze in both tournaments.
