Canucks announce that they've selected a new captain
The Vancouver Canucks have not had a captain since Bo Horvat was dealt to the New York Islanders last season. In recent weeks, we've heard a lot of chatter about a few potential candidates to take over the job in Vancouver, but we didn't know when a decision was coming. That decision came today.
The Canucks have officially named Quinn Hughes the 15th captain in Canucks franchise history on Monday, putting an end to all of the speculation. The team's GM, Patrik Allvin, revealed that the entire locker room was thrilled with the decision.
"We informed our core leadership group that Quinn was going to be the captain. Not only was everybody enthusiastic and supportive of the decision, but they were also extremely happy for Quinn. He is very well liked and respected inside our dressing room, and we know he will continue to grow and develop his leadership skills in the years to come." - Canucks GM Patrik Allvin on naming Hughes the 15th captain in Canucks franchise history
Hughes was honoured and touched with the team's decision to offer him the captaincy after a career year in which he posted 76 points in 78 games. The 23-year-old defenseman shared the following thoughts in a statement on Monday after being namd captain:
"It means a great deal to me to be named captain of the Canucks. When I came here 5 years ago, I knew what I was walking into having grown up in Toronto; just a crazy hockey market and a passionate fan base. It has been a pleasure and treat to play for this franchise and to be the captain is something that is incredibly special and something that I couldn't ever imagine would happen." - Hughes on being named the 15th captain in Canucks history
Congrats to Hughes on being named captain. It's a well-deserved honour for one of the league's top young defensemen.
