Calgary Flames announce signing of a major piece of their core
After months of speculation about the team's future, the Calgary Flames have finally signed a member of their core to a contract extension. Over the summer reports suggested up to four players. We're looking for a change of scenery. In that list of players was Mikael Backlund.
It was initially reported that Backlund was interested in seeing how the season played out before considering signing a contract. But upon returning to Calgary after a summer away, it appears he's had a change of heart. Today, Seravalli broke the news that the two parties had come together on a 2-year contract extension.
Sounds like #Flames are closing in on a two-year contract extension with Mikael Backlund in the $4.5 million neighborhood. Details being finalized now.
With that, lots of rumblings Backlund will also be next captain in Calgary.
It is expected that Backlund will be named team captain in the coming days. Congrats Mikael!
