On Saturday morning, the Columbus Blue Jackets officially confirmed that veteran forward and team captain Boone Jenner would be sidelined for the next several weeks due to a fractured jaw suffered in a win over the St. Louis Blues on Friday night.
According to the Jackets, Jenner is expected to miss the next 6 weeks of the regular season, dealing a significant blow to a team that has struggled this season. Jenner, who was on track for a career-high 38-goal season, will likely see that milestone derailed by this unfortunate injury.
To add to the woes, Blue Jackets fans won't be able to point fingers at anyone for the incident, as the injury resulted from one of Jenner's own teammates. Jenner took a hit to the face from an errant shot by Blue Jackets defenseman Ivan Provorov during the second period of Friday night's game against the Blues.
While Provorov likely feels remorseful about the situation, it offers little remedy for the challenging position the Blue Jackets now face or for Boone Jenner's injured jaw, for that matter.
