Certain members of a team are expected to bring physical play and strike fear into the opponent. For the new look Leafs, that's now meant to be players like Ryan Reaves and Jake McCabe, but last night, Timothy Liljegren stepped into the role.
Last night, Mailloux perhaps underestimated the new team attitude of physicality from the Leafs, including from Liljegren. As Mailloux carried the puck through the neutral zone and across the Leafs blueline, Liljegren lined him up and delivered a massive hit, sending Mailloux to the ice angered.
From there the game picked up from a physical perspective.
After that play, the game heated up from a physical perspective. The game became chipped then you might expect for preseason, perhaps rendering the rivalries early between the Leafs and Habs.
Despite these two teams likely being on opposite sides of the standings once again this year, it's nice to see the historical rivalry still alive.
