Logan Thompson is entering this season with the Washington Capitals, and he is looking to make a big impression and impact on the team.

At practice today, Thompson got to show off his brand-new goalie gear, custom-made by Bauer. As you can see, the pads are mainly red and white, with a triple of blue that has some stars inside of it. It is meant to be an homage to the Capitals' iconic logo. However, it seems like some fans have found another interpretation.

Below, a whole bunch of fans on Twitter pointed out how the goalie pads look a lot like the Confederate flag. Overall, the flag represents a dark time in the history of the United States, so it is easy to understand why people would be sensitive about it.

Having said that, it is very clearly just a coincidence and not something that Thompson meant to do. Only someone operating in bad faith would think otherwise. Regardless, the gear does have a clear resemblance to both the Confederate flag, and the team's logo.

Since entering the league with the Las Vegas Golden Knights back in 2020, Thompson has posted a record of 56-32-11, with a 2.67 GAA and a .912 save %. At this point, Thompson will be looking to prove himself as a long-term option in Washington. As for his pads, only time will tell whether or not he changes them out for something less controversial.
