Coming into this season, everyone was confident that Alex Ovechkin would break Wayne Gretzky's goal record of 894. But as things change, it may not be so set in stone.

Ovechkin is having his worst season statistically, ever. Ovechkin sits at only eight goals in the first half of the year, and missed yesterday's game against the New York Rangers. Alex barely misses games, so this was shocking.
Ovechkin's age of 38 may have something to do with this, as his body may be shutting down on him. The Russian sniper still needs 64 more goals to break Gretzky's record, and he only has two more years left of his current contract till he might hang the skates up. The shortened COVID seasons and NHL lockouts, plus missing more games and practices as he gets older, may come back to bite him when it comes to the record.
