Ryan Smith, the owner of the Utah Hockey Club and the Utah Jazz, is nearing a deal with Salt Lake City that would keep both teams at the Delta Center for the next 30 years. The deal would provide $900 million in public funding for renovations to the Delta Center and the development of a sports and entertainment district in the surrounding area.
As part of the agreement, the Utah Hockey Club and the Utah Jazz would face significant fines if they were to play a home regular season game anywhere else. However, if either team were to participate in an outdoor game in Utah or play abroad, they could avoid fines by being designated as the away team, similar to a deal between the New York Rangers and Madison Square Garden.
