Craig Berube undermines Sheldon Keefe with major rules change
This offseason, the Toronto Maple Leafs hired Craig Berube as the replacement for Sheldon Keefe.
Considering Berube has won a Stanley Cup with the St. Louis Blues, many saw this as the right move. However, there are also some people out there who are a bit skeptical that Berube can do anything with this team. After all, the Maple Leafs have been Stanley Cup pretenders for years at this stage.
According to Luke Fox of Sportsnet, the new head coach is making some big cultural changes to the franchise. For instance, Berube does not allow music in practice. This is something that Keefe famously allowed. In fact, 50 Cent used to blast over the loudspeakers. Now, players will have to get their music fix on their own time.
"The opening of Toronto Maple Leafs training camp was the day the music died.
One could spot a couple PTOs and a PP, a 2C and an F3.
But no DJ.
Under the former coaching regime, the Maple Leafs' bag skates and line rushes were usually set to music, with a staffer designated to cue up some vintage 50 Cent to help keep pulses pounding and tempos high in the practice facility.
Under Craig Berube, however, the only "music" is that of pucks off glass, shrill neck whistles and bodies slamming into boards.
The new bench boss in town is direct and no frills, and he's demanding his charges play that way."
Only time will tell whether or not these new rules actually make a difference for the Maple Leafs. After all, music can sometimes be a motivator for a lot of players. That said, the Leafs are taking a no-nonsense approach and that may be just what they need to go on a deep run.
