Auston Matthews Shares He Would Love To Play Back Home
During their two-game series in Sweden, the Toronto Maple Leafs clinched a 4-3 victory against stars Kirill Kaprizov and Marc-Andre Fleury.
The NHL's venture into Sweden received positive feedback, with hockey deeply ingrained in Swedish culture. Auston Matthews, the Maple Leafs' standout, voiced his interest in expanding the NHL fanbase to another unique locationMexico City
Expressing enthusiasm about a potential NHL Global Series game in Mexico City, Matthews stated,
"Maybe Mexico City, that'd be fun.
NHL's Steve Mayer acknowledged teams' interest in exploring the Mexican market, saying,
"Mexico City is on a shortlist because our teams are very interested in going there." Matthews, with a personal connection as his mother Ema is from Mexico City, aligns with the idea.
If Matthews takes the ice in Mexico City, it raises the question of whether the NHL can fulfill its promise to cultivate hockey's growth in this unique market. The prospect of icy arenas against a backdrop of desert landscapes and Spanish-colonial architecture adds an intriguing visual dimension to the sport.
