Over the weekend, the Montreal Canadiens got involved in the Penguins/Sharks trade involving Erik Karlsson, bringing back former Habs defenseman Jeff Petry, along with other assets. While some were excited about the prospect of Petry being back in Montreal, their excitement was quickly quelled when insiders began suggesting that the Habs may flip Petry to another team this summer.

The Penguins are currently retaining 25% of Petry's salary, meaning that if the Habs agree to retain 50% of his remaining cap hit, a team acquiring the 35-year-old would only be paying 25% of his total deal.

According to TSN's Chris Johnston, one Western Conference team is reportedly interested in trading for Petry. Johnston says that team is the Dallas Stars.

"A team to keep an eye on is Dallas. I know they're a team that has had interest in Jeff Petry over the last couple of years. The Stars, like a lot of teams in the league, don't have endless cap space. There's been a multitude of reasons why they haven't been able to act on a trade prior to now. All of the sudden, the conditions are in place. Maybe the trade doesn't happen by training camp, maybe it doesn't happen by the start of the regular season. But certainly, in these next few months, the Canadiens can look at what's out there for Petry, and whether it makes sense to move him or not." - Johnston on Petry and the Stars

Petry has two years remaining on his contract and currently carries a $4.687M cap hit, thanks to the 25% salary retention from Pittsburgh.
