Thirty-year-old Jacob Trouba joined the New York Rangers during the 20192020 season and was named captain for the 20202021 campaign. Despite his dependable play at the back end for the Blue shirts, Trouba's name is constantly making the rounds in rumors.
Recently, on the Jeff Marek Show, Elliotte Friedman and Marek discussed whether or not Trouba, who made some stupid mistakes during the New York Rangers' postseason run last year, might be a buyout candidate this summer if the Rangers decided they wanted to take a different route.
While a buyout seems extremely unlikely and honestly doesn't make a ton of sense, the numbers involved in making him a free agent look like this:
2024-254m cap hit, 2025-264m cap hit, 2026-272m cap hit, 2027-282m cap hit.
Whether you agree or not, at times Trouba looks like a Norris Trophy candidate and other times he's the biggest liability on the ice for the Rangers. But for the times he brings it, is it even worth considering letting him go? Probably not, unless the Rangers feel like their window is closing, which won't be clear until they know what they're doing with Igor Shesterkin.
While things may become more clear in the next few weeks, I wouldn't bother betting the house on Trouba suiting up for a different city next year. At this point he's still too valuable to the franchise.
