The Toronto Maple Leafs may trade forward David Kampf this summer to improve their bottom-six. Kampf has been with the Maple Leafs since 2021, setting career highs in goals, assists, and points, but his production dropped by 30% in the 2023-2024 season. General Manager Brad Treliving has re-signed Max Domi and brought in other players, but Kampf's future with the team is uncertain. Training camps will open in nine-to-ten weeks, and it remains to be seen if Kampf will still be with the Maple Leafs.

Kampf's contract extension, signed in June 2023, keeps him with the Maple Leafs through the 2026-2027 season. However, his performance in the 2023-2024 season was lower than expected. He scored five goals in 58 games and is suited for a shut-down role and penalty killing.
"The bottom-six forwards need some attention as well. Is David Kampf still in the plans to lead the Leafs' checking line? There's a good chance they cut bait there as well." Kypreos said.
Potential trade destinations for Kampf include the Colorado Avalanche, who need depth down the middle, and the Dallas Stars, who are expected to add a forward before the trade deadline. However, finding a trade partner willing to take on Kampf's multi-year contract at $2.4M AAV may be challenging.
The Maple Leafs may benefit from trading Kampf to optimize their roster and salary cap management, potentially creating room for significant improvements in the lineup. Pontus Holmberg offers a cheaper alternative at $800K, which could free up substantial cap space for roster improvements.
