Max Domi refuses to wear his dad's vacant 28 in Toronto
The Toronto Maple Leafs will kick off their 2023-24 season tonight at home against the Montreal Canadiens in an Original Six matchup. There are several new faces set to debut in Toronto this evening, but perhaps none more intriguing than Max Domi, simply because of his last name.
Max's father, the legendary Tie Domi, shed his blood, sweat and tears for the Leafs through 12 of his 16 NHL seasons, all while a young Max Domi watched from the family box at the then Air Canada Centre. He always wanted to play for his dad's old team one day. Well, today that dream becomes a reality.
Max has worn a few different jersey numbers over the course of his career, but never his dad's #28. When he signed with the Maple Leafs, his dad's old #28 was worn by Sam Lafferty. Now that Lafferty has been traded to the Vancouver Canucks, #28 is vacant, and the media members in Toronto were very curious as to whether or not Max would opt to switch from his current #11 to his dad's former #28. His answer was a surprising one.
"No, absolutely not. That's my old man's number ... I will not be wearing 28. I'm sticking with 11." - Max Domi on sticking with #11 instead of switching to #28
After signing Domi to a 1-year, $3M deal this summer, Leafs GM Brad Treliving revealed that Domi wasn't brought in because of his family legacy. He was brought in because of the merit of his body of work at the NHL level. It would appear as though Domi wants to try to establish his own legacy, which is certainly respectable.
