After just one season as President of Hockey Operations with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Burke and the team's GM Ron Hextall were shown the door after missing the playoffs. Burke always seems to have a funny way of always landing on his feet, though. With summer coming to a close, Burke has already reportedly landed himself a new gig, this time outside of the NHL.
Burke's new gig won't have him in another men's league. Surprisingly, his new job reportedly has him lined up to be a "leader" and "guiding voice" for the Professional Women's Hockey Players Association (PWHPA). Formed in 2019, the group aims to form a "sustainable and viable women's hockey league in North America." A new women's hockey league is expected to be up and running by January of 2024.
Burke has extensive experience in prominent roles with a number of NHL teams. He's served as GM of the Hartford Whalers, Vancouver Canucks, Anaheim Ducks, and Toronto Maple Leafs. Burke has also been President of Hockey Operations in Vancouver, Calgary and, of course, most recently, the Pittsburgh Penguins. Burke also spent some time working as a hockey analyst for Sportsnet.
