Former 3rd pick placed on waivers
The NHL waiver wire was quiet on Thursday, but on Friday it was active once again. According to Chris Johnston of TSN, the Edmonton Oilers have placed defender Markus Niemelainen on waivers. The Oilers hope to assign him to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors.
"Placed on NHL waivers today: Markus Niemelainen (EDM)." Johnston said.
Niemelainen, just 25, played in 23 games for the Edmonton Oilers last year, where he didn't record a points. He also played 30 games for the AHL's Bakersfield Condors where he tallied 7 points (two goals, five assists), 18 penalty minutes and was a plus-four.
Teams around the league will have until 2 p.m. ET on Saturday to place a claim on Markus Niemelainen, with the Anaheim Ducks having first dibs after finishing 32nd overall in the 2022-23 standings.
