Legendary Maple Leafs defenseman Bobby Baun passed away last week and with that, as always, comes an outpouring of love, support, condolences, tributes and memories celebrating the person and player.

Baun was loved by his fans and teammates, but he was also loved and respected by his opponents as well, it would seem. This past week, Don Cherry took to social media to share one of the lessons that Baun taught him on the ice during his rookie season in the AHL.
"Sad to hear of the passing of Bobby Baun. In my rookie year in Hershey I was minding my own business watching a fight and Bobby came up behind me and put me in a choke hold. He taught me a big lesson that game. Always know who's on the ice. Godspeed Bobby."
The lesson? Always be mindful of who is on the ice with you and don't be a bystander. Always grab someone during a post-whistle scrum.
While this lesson was way more valuable when Cherry played, especially in the AHL, it still rings true today. This one is sort of a right of passage. As a young player, you're looking to the guys around you to teach you and help you learn the ropes. On that night, Baun taught Cherry a lesson he never forgot.
