Fans have spent a great deal of time criticizing the Tampa Bay Lightning, Vegas Golden Knights and Toronto Maple Leafs for utilizing LTIR to remain cap compliant even while carrying several million dollars more than the league's salary cap. Now there's another potential culprit.

Today, the Avs confirmed that captain Gabriel Landeskog would be out for the season and that they hope he may be ready to return in time for the playoffs. Surely the Avalanche will receive the same criticism that the Leafs, Bolts and Golden Knights have faced, right?.. right?

Colorado is already almost $5M over the NHL's $83.5M salary cap, so the timing of Landeskog's potential return to the lineup is extremely suspect. As we all know, in the playoffs, the salary cap becomes null and void. Since the Avs aren't going to willingly part with a $5M player (or some combination of players to equal $5M) in order to activate Landeskog before the playoffs, would you not agree that this is a little suspect?

Make no mistake about it. Even after a whole season and a half of missed time, Landeskog is still an excellent player and will provide the Avs with a significant boost come playoff time.

Something tells me that when it's time to negotiate a new CBA, there will be a new rule put in place to prevent this sort of activity now that it's becoming a bit of an epidemic.
