This summer, the Vancouver Canucks plan to trade forward Ilya Mikheyev in order to free up more cap space. The Canucks general manager, Patrik Allvin, has decided to take a different tack in trying to get Mikheyev off the roster because it seems that the market isn't fond of the quick Russian.
Rick Dhaliwal of Vancouver Athletics has learned that Dan Millstein, Mikheyev's agent, has been granted authorization to assist in arranging a trade.
Mikheyev encountered difficulties in his first season with the Canucks due to an ACL injury that prevented him from playing in about half of the 20222023 season and postponed his 20232024 campaign. In 78 games during his sophomore campaign with Vancouver, he had 31 points and 11 goals. During the playoffs, he played in 11 games and scored 0 goals, which was a very disappointing performance considering his decreased ice time of 12:06.
Teams are requesting that Vancouver include a "sweetener" in any agreement to acquire Mikheyev, according to insider Frank Seravalii. The Canucks are not willing to do this at this time.
Purchasing Mikheyev's contract outright is an additional choice. That would result in a cap penalty that CapFriendly estimates would be between $1.15 million and $2.15 million per year for the following four seasons. Ultimately, I believe that Canucks general manager Patrick Allvin will assess the situation and ultimately agree to the demand for sweeteners in order to get out of Mikheyev's contract.
