The Toronto Maple Leafs couldn't wait any longer for goalie Ilya Samsonov's struggles to end, deciding to place him on waivers after allowing six goals against the low-ranked Columbus Blue Jackets. Since going unclaimed, Samsonov is now heading to the Toronto Marlies, the American Hockey League affiliate.

His 2023-24 win-loss record was a far cry from last season's strong performance, going 5-2-6 with a 3.94 goals-against average and .862 save percentage.

Captain John Tavares attributes Samsonov's struggles in the net to the entire team not performing better in front of him.

"We feel for Sammy in the way that it has gone," Tavares said. "As a team and individually, you're disappointed that in a lot of those games, we just didn't play better. We love him as a teammate. So definitely feel for him."

The question now is whether Samsonov can rediscover his game in the American Hockey League and potentially re-join the Leafs later this season. Only time will tell. In the meantime, the Leafs will be relying on the duo of Martin Jones and Dennis Hildeby, as Joseph Woll remains sidelined due to injury.
