Three Players Stand Out As Trade Candidates For The New York Islanders
The New York Islanders are gearing up for a crucial stretch if they aim to secure a spot in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs. With the All-Star break behind them and the trade deadline looming, President and GM Lou Lamoriello seems to be eyeing potential candidates to bolster the team.
According to Andrew Fantucchio of NYI Hockey Now, three players stand out as possible trade candidates for Lamoriello, offering the Islanders a chance to add depth for a playoff push.
Leading the list is Brock Nelson, the 32-year-old veteran center who's having a solid year with 21 goals and 38 points in 49 games. Despite his $6 million cap hit for this season and the next, Nelson could be a valuable addition for a contender.
Simon Holmstrom, a first-round pick in the 2019 NHL entry draft, is also on the radar. While the 22-year-old forward has untapped potential, he hasn't secured a permanent spot in the NHL yet. Holmstrom will become a restricted free agent after the current season.
Another potential trade piece is goaltender Semyon Varlamov. Despite playing only 16 games this season, Varlamov boasts good numbers with a 6-5-3 record, a .914 save percentage, and a 2.88 goals-against average.
According to Fantucchio, "F Brock Nelson, Simon Holmstrom, and Semyon Varlamov are listed as possible trade candidates for the Isles at the trade deadline."
Both Nelson and Varlamov could attract significant assets on the trade market, particularly with the demand for centers and goaltenders. This trade deadline holds added significance for Lamoriello, given the Islanders' struggle to meet expectations in the 2023-24 season. It's a pivotal moment for the team.
