The NHL found itself in an unexpected situation when Charlie McAvoy appealed his four-game suspension for an illegal hit on Oliver Ekman Larsson. This appeal took the league by surprise as they had considered it a clear-cut case, but McAvoy's decision to challenge it raised eyebrows.

"Much surprise on NHL side at the appeal. Felt this was a 'cut and dry' illegal check to the head ruling," remarked ESPN's Greg Wyshynski.

McAvoy aims to reduce his suspension by at least one game, and it now rests in the hands of NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, who has several options at his disposal.
"Bettman could uphold the current suspension, reduce it, or increase it," Wyshynski noted.
While an increase seems unlikely, McAvoy stands to regain a substantial part of his salary if even a single game is subtracted from his suspension, which amounts to nearly $50,000, as per Capfriendly.
