After the trophy presentation, captain Sidney Crosby raised the trophy in victory before passing it to Brad Marchand, who got to enjoy the celebration on home ice at TD Garden.
Crosby gave the trophy to Marchand first since he was in his home building
"We were in Boston, he was an older guy," Crosby said when asked why he gave Marchand the trophy first. "Him being in his home building here, and being right next to me worked out well."
For Marchand, it was a long-awaited moment. The last time he lifted a championship trophy was in 2011 with the Boston Bruins.
However, that Game 7 victory over the Vancouver Canucks happened on the road, making Thursday the first time he got to savor a title win on home ice.
The night also marked another milestone for Crosby and Marchand. With Canada's triumph, the Nova Scotia-born duo each secured their sixth career gold medal.
Marchand had no idea how many gold medals he has won
"I didn't even know that," Marchand said. "We know as Canadian players, the only outcome that is acceptable is a gold medal. It's gold or bust."
Now, both players have shifted their focus back to the NHL, with Crosby and Marchand set to return to action on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
