Gretzky's stick from his 1988 Stanley Cup victory is up for auction and you won't believe the estimated price
The name Wayne Gretzky is synonymous with greatness. Hey, they don't call him "The Great One" for nothing. Gretzky is renowned as the consensus best player in the history of the game, so when fans have the opportunity to snag some Gretzky merchandise and/or memorabilia, they tend to jump at the chance.
On Tuesday, an announcement was made that Wayne Gretzky's stick from the Edmonton Oilers' 1988 Stanley Cup victory is actually slated to end up being auctioned off. The important piece of hockey memorabilia is expected to bring in more than $500,000 USD.
"To have something like this is really remarkable," said Sotheby's Head of Streetwear and Modern Collectibles, Brahm Wachter.
"You're talking about really the greatest to ever grace the ice and you're talking about his last championship, which of course helped cement his name into the history books."
A few years back, a Gretzky jersey from the same collection sold for $1.5M, while his gloves from that game were also sold for $200K. Why are these pieces so significant? Because they were worn during Gretzky's final Stanley Cup win in his illustrious career. Shortly after the Cup victory, the Oilers traded The Great One to Los Angeles.
