Could the NHL investigate the Toronto Maple Leafs? Fans everywhere are calling for an investigation
The Toronto Maple Leafs have a reputation across the NHL as one of the most hated organizations by fans across the league. Almost every decision the Maple Leafs make is scrutinized by fans across the league and put under a national microscope. After yesterday's announcement the Maple Leafs are once again in the spotlight.
Yesterday the Leafs PR account announced the team had placed
Matt Murray on long-term injured reserve. Immediately after the announcement fans everywhere began to call for the NHL to intervene and launch a thorough investigation into the matter.
This should be immediately investigated. He was ready to go in the playoffs and this reeks of cap circumvention.
So let me get this straight, Matt Murray was declared 'healthy' by the Leafs during the playoffs, but when the off-season hits and suddenly they've got no cap space, he's suddenly so hurt he can't play for the entire season?
Such nonsense. The league has to fix this loophole.
For years now fans have called for the league to fix the LTIR loophole, but the league has made no attempt to do so. Teams like Chicago, Tampa Bay, Montreal and Vegas have all utilized this clause in the collective bargaining agreement.
However, it appears the Matt Murray situation is different.
According to multiple Insiders the Maple Leafs inquired about the possibility of buying out Murray. It was then that Murray's representatives advised the Maple Leafs he was injured and unable to be bought out. This situation differs heavily from some other situations, and in all likelihood Matt Murray's NHL career is over.
One of the biggest critiques of Murray when the Maple Leafs acquired him was that he was unable to stay healthy. But now that his health has finally caught up to him, people are suddenly surprised?
Only time will tell if the Maple Leafs will be at the center of an investigation, but it is definitely imperative that the NHL examines the LTIR process as a whole.
