10 season NHL veteran gives up on the NHL after being unable to find a new contract
When free agency opened up on July 1st, it quickly became clear to veteran forward Derek Grant that the NHL might not be a further option for him. After 20 days waiting for a team to come calling Grant finally made the difficult decision that if he wanted to continue his hockey career it would have to be in Europe.
On Thursday, it was announced that Grant had come to terms on a one-year deal with the ZSC Lions of the Swiss National League.
The following quote has been translated from German.
Derek is a physically strong striker who can hold the puck very well and will give our team both size and toughness. He goes where it hurts, is strong in front of goal.
Grant, who is now 33, played in 427 career games in the National Hockey League with the Ottawa Senators, Calgary Flames, Buffalo Sabres, Nashville Predators, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers and the Anaheim Ducks.
During his career the native of Abbotsford, BC put up 57 goals and 75 assists, along with 162 penalty minutes. Grant also added two assists in 19 career playoff games.
