Former Edmonton Oilers goalie officially retires and reveals new career
Mikko Koskinen was drafted with the first pick of the second round back in 2009, by the New York Islanders, who were convinced he was the future.
Unfortunately, his time in New York did not last long, and he ended up going to the KHL for multiple years. However, in 2018, he found new life in the NHL as he got to play with the Edmonton Oilers. Although his statistics weren't amazing, he did give the team some consistency. He was well-liked by the fans, even if he was scapegoated by his coaches from time to time.
Today, it was revealed that Koskinen has announced his retirement from the NHL. He will now be a player agent in Finland. This is a massive career shift, although it is one that other players have made in the past.
"Former NHL goaltender Mikko Koskinen has ended his playing career and moved on to a new job in the ice hockey business.
The 36-year-old Koskinen has started working as a player agent. The players' association announced at the end of July that Koskinen had been accepted as a registered agent.
During his playing career, Koskinen was a client of the large agency Wasserman. Now he works for a small office in Helsinki.
As an agent, Koskinen has given up his shareholding in SM-liiga club Kiekko-Espoo. This is reflected in the club's shareholder register."
This is an awesome transition for Koskinen and we wish him the best of luck moving forward. It is always cool to see former players continue to work within the sport, even after retiring. Hopefully, his newest venture is a huge success.
