Nick Robertson slaps the Toronto Maple Leafs with harsh reality
Nick Robertson and the Toronto Maple Leafs have been in a bit of a pickle as of late, with neither side coming to terms on a new contract.
Robertson has dealt with lots of injuries, and while he was productive with the Leafs last season, it seems like the 22-year-old wants to just go elsewhere and start fresh. According to Chris Johnston, the Leafs could very easily give him an increased role with the franchise. In fact, Johnston believes they might be able to sway Robertson's decision if they present their case to him.
However, as it stands, Johnston provided a more pessimistic reality. Essentially, Robertson appears to be stuck in his ways and just wants out. The relationship is fractured, and now, he must wait for the Leafs to figure out how to move forward. Otherwise, this is a standoff that could last a very long time.
"I think, obviously, at this stage of the summer, the Leafs are still working through what happens with Nick Robertson, but there's a pretty clear path for him to be part of the mix at left wing, to potentially have a role that exceeds what he's had in the past," Johnston said. "But at this stage, Nick Robertson doesn't seem inclined to sign in Toronto and is sticking to the idea that he'd like to play somewhere else. And so I think they have to kind of sort that out first or as part of this."
