In the next weeks, Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney will have a full plate as he works to bolster his squad for the upcoming campaign. The Bruins' season didn't go as planned; they were defeated by the Florida Panthers in the second round, and Sweeney will have to make choices regarding several free agents. Derek Forbort is one of those free agents who seems to have made up his mind already.
Derek Forbort has made the decision, according to David Pagnotta, to test the unrestricted free agency market beginning on July 1st rather than rejoin the Bruins for the upcoming campaign.
The 32-year-old Forbort signed a free agent contract with the Boston Bruins on the first day of free agency in 2021, and he has played with them for the last three seasons. Forbort played in 35 games for the Bruins in the 202324 season, recording four assists, 17 penalty minutes, and a pluseight rating. In addition, he appeared in two games with Providence, their American Hockey League affiliate, but was held scoreless.
Derek Forbort may draw some attention this summer if he becomes a free agent. Though he lacks the "wow" factor, he always plays with great effort and is a strong fit for any team searching for a lockdown defenceman for their third pairing. He also plays a terrific defensive game.
