Igor Shesterkin, the goaltender for the New York Rangers, has one year remaining on his contract, which will pay him just over $5.6 million. However, following an impressive playoff run in which he carried the Rangers to the Eastern Conference final, the twenty-eight-year-old Russian deserves a sizable raise and a long-term deal to remain with the Rangers going forward.
Shesterkin, who finished 10-5-1 with a 2.24 GAA and a.927 save %, is obviously handling things with aplomb, as seen by the way he answered questions on the Rangers' final day of media availability before the team heads out for the summer.
Recognizing that goalies are a unique breed in that they place a great deal of pressure on themselves in both positive and negative situations, Shesterkin's lighthearted response is both surprisingly refreshing and entertaining.
Shesterkin has perhaps become the most important member of the Rangers organization, thus they should do all in their power to ensure that he stays with the team for the rest of his NHL career. It's a whole other story whether President and General Manager Chris Drury can persuade Shesterkin and his entourage that he belongs in Manhattan.
