During the NHL draft, it was reported that the Canadiens and the Ducks were actually very close to getting a deal done. However, the Ducks were trying to get one final piece that the Habs were not willing to give up. The Ducks wanted a young player, and the Canadiens have a whole lot of them. Having said that, some fans have been left wondering where the trade talks have gone.
During an episode of "32 Thoughts" with Elliotte Friedman, the Sportsnet analyst poured some cold water on the idea that the talks continued. As Friedman explains, they essentially died after the draft. Besides, the team got Patrik Laine, which solved their scoring depth issues.
Now, Zegras is starting the year with the Ducks, a team that probably won't contend for much this year. The same can be said about the Canadiens, although they knew that from the beginning. This Habs team is playing with house money and they want to show the league that their young core is one to watch for years to come.
