Senators writer Bruce Garrioch announced on the Ottawa Citizen that the team will be buying out Travis Hamonic's remaining contract year this week.
The acquisition, which would cost the Senators a maximum hit of $366,000 over the following two seasons, will become official on Wednesday when the buyout window opens. After that, Hamonic will be able to sign with any of the other 31 NHL teams as an unrestricted free agent.
The Vancouver Canucks traded for a third-round pick in March 2022, and the 33-year-old Hamonic then joined the Ottawa Senators. The native of St. Malo, Manitoba, recorded his lowest-ever single-season point total this past season despite missing time due to upper- and lower-body injuries.
This season, Hamonic has played in 48 games with the Senators, recording six points (two goals, four assists), 40 penalty minutes, and a plus-ten rating.
In order to turn the Senators squad into one that is competitive for a postseason berth the following season, general manager Steve Staios has a lot of work ahead of him this summer. Boston's Linus Ullmark seems to be the objective for the Senators, who are rumored to be looking for goaltender help. Although it would be a fantastic start for Staios if the Senators could get him, there is still more work to be done.
