The NHL could see another Canadian team join the league in near future

In Mississauga, Ontario, the mayoral race is heating up with a promise that could shake up the sports scene. Candidate Peter McCallion is making waves by pledging to push for an NHL team if he clinches the seat.
McCallion is adamant that Mississauga deserves recognition in its own right, not just as a shadow of Toronto. With its sizable population as one of Toronto's largest suburbs, he argues it could support a team, even if it means going head-to-head with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Peter McCallion says that Mississauga is no longer the "little brother" of Toronto, and that the city deserves professional sports. McCallion said he'll bring together members of the business community to draft an NHL bid if he becomes the city's new mayor. He said he also wants the city to have a Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) team.
Expressing his vision, McCallion also aims to lure a PWHL team to the city. While the league hasn't discussed expansion yet, McCallion believes it could be a possibility down the road, provided the league's finances are stable.
Currently, Mississauga lacks major professional sports teams, although it boasts the Ontario Hockey League's Mississauga Steelheads.
Despite McCallion's aspirations, the NHL's focus seems to be on American markets like Houston, Atlanta, and Phoenix, leaving little room for Canadian expansion. Only time will tell if McCallion can turn his dreams into reality.
