New York Rangers forward Kaapo Kakko has been at the center of trade rumors for quite some time, but as of July 21st, he remains with the team. Despite ongoing speculation and numerous discussions, no deal has come to fruition.
Heading into the summer, Kakko was set to become a restricted free agent. However, the Rangers and Kakko's representatives agreed on a one-year contract for the 2024-25 season worth $2.4 million USD. Despite securing a contract, trade rumors continued to swirl around the Finnish forward, especially leading up to the NHL Entry Draft.
It seemed likely at one point that Kakko would be traded, but the offers received by Rangers General Manager Chris Drury were underwhelming. According to Vince Mercogliano of USA TODAY, a source revealed that the Rangers were not pleased with the offers they received for Kakko in the week leading up to the draft.
The Rangers hope that Kaapo Kakko can take a significant step forward next season and live up to the expectations that came with being the second overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft. So far, Kakko has amassed 117 points in 300 regular season games and nine points in 44 playoff contests.
The Rangers' management is holding out for a fair value offer, unwilling to let Kakko go for anything less than what they believe he is worth. As the offseason progresses, it remains to be seen whether a team will present an offer that meets the Rangers' expectations or if Kakko will have the chance to prove himself further in New York.
For now, Kaapo Kakko remains a New York Ranger. The team's management has made it clear that they are not willing to trade him unless they receive a substantial offer. With a new contract in place and the possibility of increased ice time, the upcoming season could be a pivotal one for Kakko's career in the NHL.
