Edmonton Oilers have reportedly found their next General Manager
Edmonton Oilers Expected to Name Mark Hunter as New General Manager
The Edmonton Oilers have been without a General Manager since the departure of Ken Holland on June 30th, when his contract expired. CEO of Hockey Operations Jeff Jackson has been managing the team through the free agency period. Now, it appears Jackson has found the Oilers' next GM, and it's a name that might surprise many.
Mark Hunter to Take the Helm
According to reports, the Oilers are set to name Mark Hunter as their new General Manager as early as next week.
"Hearing that the Oilers are expected to name Mark Hunter as their new GM. Announcement could come as soon as next week." Billy Stefanski reported.
Hunter's Impressive Background
Mark Hunter has a notable history in hockey management, having owned the OHL's London Knights with his brother Dale for the past 20 years. He has served as head coach and general manager for the Knights, leading them to considerable success. Hunter also spent time as the Director of Player Personnel for the Toronto Maple Leafs. After four years with the Leafs, he returned to the Knights following a mutual termination of his contract with Toronto.
A Long-Time Target for Jackson
Jeff Jackson has reportedly admired Hunter for quite some time, and his appointment is seen as a significant move for the franchise. Hunter's proven track record in talent evaluation and team building makes him an appealing choice for the Oilers.
Immediate Challenges Ahead
Hunter will quickly find himself in the thick of crucial decisions for the Oilers. Superstar
Leon Draisaitl is entering the final year of his contract next season, and
Connor McDavid, the best player in the world and the Oilers' captain, will be a UFA at the end of the 2026-27 season. Ensuring the retention and satisfaction of these key players will be among Hunter's top priorities.
Hunter's arrival signals a new chapter for the Oilers, with significant roster decisions looming. His success in the OHL suggests he has the skills needed to navigate these challenges and help the Oilers build a team capable of competing for the Stanley Cup.
As Edmonton fans await the official announcement, there is cautious optimism that Hunter's appointment will bring the stability and strategic vision needed to propel the Oilers forward.
