His show "First Take" is one of the most popular on the network and it rakes in millions of dollars every year. Reports claim that Smith is making about $10 million per year with ESPN. However, his contract is about to be up and he could very well make a huge bag somewhere else. That said, it is in ESPN's best interest to retain him given the fact that he has made the company so much money.
There are some reports that Smith could even make as much as $100 million over the next five years. Of course, that is a lofty salary expectation, and in a recent interview, Smith was asked about his salary demand. While Smith didn't confirm the number, Smith says that he is a winner and that he should get paid the big bucks.
In fact, he compared his situation to Dak Prescott. Smith argues that in his industry, he has won at the highest level. However, Prescott is making $60 million per year and hasn't actually won anything. It is an interesting argument, although the Dallas Cowboys and ESPN are two very different entities.
One has to wonder if ESPN would ever want to shell out that kind of money. In the eyes of many, Smith is a stain to sports journalism. However, in the eyes of others, he is pure entertainment. With that in mind, this could be a difficult negotiation process for all sides involved.
